Meet John H.

“It’s given me a good sense of job security.”

That’s one of the main takeaways when you talk to John about why he came to Challenge.

John came to Ithaca at a young age after moving from Watertown. In school in Ithaca, John says he started to get interested in writing, specifically poetry. That hobby stays with him to this day, but it was in 2010 where he really started to think about using his skill as a writer on a more consistent basis.

John says he gained some confidence then when he jumped into the world of self-publishing. He’s worked with a friend to create “Poems From the Heart,” “Mikey’s Find,” and “Stories of Wonder,” and says he even has plans to put together a comic strip in the future.

Like many of the people who come through Challenge’s doors, a little help has gone a long way to make them a success. John says he was referred to Challenge in 2012, when he started doing some light production work at Challenge’s facilities. Now, you can regularly see John in Challenge’s Imaging department, working on completing projects for individuals, municipalities, law enforcement and more.

John says coming to Challenge has really helped him out, and says this is the longest he’s ever held a job.

“I used to always go fast (at work),” John said, when asked about the biggest help Challenge has provided. “Now, I take my time.”

John says he’s seen the positives of what Challenge can provide, adding that the organization can provide guidelines and help people “get their life in order.”
